How to Enjoy Your Infrared Sauna Session

 An infrared sauna doesn’t come with strict usage guidelines – you can always be innovative with it and adjust the way you use it to suit your needs. You have a lot of space to experiment with the sauna so that you can get the best out of it. Let us look at the three phases of using the sauna and how to maximize on each.

Preparation Phase

Turn on the infrared sauna and set a temperature that suits you, preferably between 110 and 120 F. This means you can set it higher or lower depending on your preferences. This can depend on the prevailing temperature and your current condition.

Once you switch it on, you need to wait for 10-20 minutes for the sauna to warm up to the required temperature. One thing you can do during this time is to take a warm bath, which is believed to improve your sweating. Wipe off any water from your body before entering the sauna. If you are up for it, go for some physical exercises so that it can shorten the time it takes for you to perspire.

Sauna Phase

When ready, enter the sauna and take a comfy position. Set the timer so that you do the sauna in sessions. If this is your first time, start with 20 minutes and increase the time as you get used to it. You can decide to sit back and wait for the heat to start taking effect, or you can gently massage your body to stimulate the tissues and accelerate sweating.

As a general precaution, when you start feeling bad or you stop sweating, you need to stop the session. This is because the sauna can cause hyperthermia, reason enough not to sleep in the sauna as well.


After the session, have at least 15 minutes to relax after the session. This is to allow your body to cool down before doing any other activity. Switching to a cold environment can shock your body. Take a shower to clean off any sweat from the body. Avoid using any gel or soap during cleaning, because your skin pores are open and chemicals might clog the pores.
